This paper provides on overview of the provision of ecosystem services in urban areas from the perspective of urban planning. Ecosystem services described include stormwater and air quality improvement, temperature and climate moderation, recreation, moderation of environmental extremes, pollination and seed dispersal, noise reduction, food supply, and animal sightings. Methods for valuation (economic, sociocultural, insurance) and how they can inform urban planning are described. The authors note that there are few studies addressing non-economic values and suggest opportunities for future research.
