This article provides an overview of the many economic methods used to value the amenities that urban forests provide. The concepts of use value, hedonic pricing, travel cost method, contingent valuation, and ecosystem services valuation are presented. Benefits in terms of human physical and mental health are described. The article concludes with a strategy for conceiving of urban nature as “green infrastructure” to ensure that it receives adequate funding and public support.
